A bit of our history

The Metropolitan Area Youth Symphony was created to continue the legacy of its inspiration, Mr. Jonathan May.

Since 1984, Mr. May followed his dream of bringing a well-rounded music education to thousands of young students in the Central Florida community.  After his passing in 2010, his wife Maureen May, daughter Emily (May) Costa, and close friend Michael Miller founded this orchestra program to honor and further Mr. May’s life’s mission.

Where we are today

Now over 10 years since its founding, the MAYS features four orchestras of students coming from all areas of Central Florida spanning beginner, intermediate and advanced skill levels, as well as a variety of additional opportunities.

Today, the MAYS programs are conducted by Ms. Maureen May, Mrs. Emily Costa, and Dr. Mauricio Cespedes, whose combined guidance inspires and educates our young musicians every note of the way.

If you are just getting to know us, please contact us, come to a concert, check out a rehearsal, or just go ahead audition to join us.
